Barbara Hepburn
Education Officer
A new Education Officer has recently been appointed to the AONB. Barbara Hepburn has a background in primary school teaching and teacher training and will be based in the Discovery Centre in Silloth.
As a keen environmentalist Barbara is enthusiastic about working with school groups. She believes that young children should be aware of their environment and the influences that have shaped the landscape. She hopes that by visiting the centre and undertaking some field work along the coast they will get a sense of the special nature of the Solway Coast AONB.
Schools are already booking sessions at the Solway Coast Discovery Centre. The sessions are designed to support a broad curriculum and teachers are able to discuss the focus for their visit so that it can enhance and develop work in schools. The children spend half a day in the centre and half the day out on the beach at Silloth, Mawbray or Allonby, depending on the subjects to be covered.
